The next stage of our voyage takes us along the Tyrrhenian Sea, tracing Italy’s spectacular western coastline from Viareggio to Tropea. This route offers an enchanting mix of golden beaches, storied port towns, dramatic headlands, and idyllic islands, perfect for sailors in search of both culture and natural beauty.
Starting in Viareggio, a lively Tuscan resort town known for its Art Nouveau architecture and elegant promenade, we set sail southward. Our first offshore destination is Elba, the largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago and famed as Napoleon’s place of exile. With its rugged hills, secluded bays, and charming capital Portoferraio, Elba offers excellent opportunities for swimming, hiking, and exploring its rich history.
From Elba, we continue toward the Pontine Islands, a cluster of volcanic gems rising from deep blue waters. Ponza, the largest, enchants visitors with pastel-colored houses, crystal-clear coves like Chiaia di Luna, and a relaxed island vibe. Nearby Palmarola, uninhabited and wild, is a sailor’s dream with dramatic cliffs and caves accessible only by boat.
Our journey then brings us to the Amalfi Coast, one of the most celebrated stretches of shoreline in the world. Dropping anchor off Amalfi or Positano reveals pastel villages clinging to sheer cliffs, fragrant lemon groves, and winding lanes lined with artisan shops. This area is a feast for the senses, offering world-class dining, dramatic landscapes, and historic treasures such as Amalfi’s 9th-century cathedral.
The final leg of the voyage takes us along Calabria’s dramatic coast to Tropea, known as the “Pearl of the Tyrrhenian.” Perched on a cliff above turquoise waters, this charming town boasts medieval streets, sandy beaches, and views of the volcanic island of Stromboli on the horizon. Tropea is the perfect finale, combining history, breathtaking scenery, and the warm welcome of southern Italy.
This sailing adventure down the Tyrrhenian Sea offers a captivating blend of culture, history, and natural wonders. From Elba’s tranquil bays to the glamour of the Amalfi Coast and the rustic charm of Tropea, every stop reveals a new facet of Italy’s maritime soul. The route’s calm anchorages, iconic landscapes, and Mediterranean charm make it an unforgettable journey for sailors.
