The next stage of our voyage takes us from Palamós, on Spain’s Costa Brava, into France, sailing along the beautiful Occitanie and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur regions. We depart from Palamós, known for its excellent seafood and tranquil charm, heading northeast across the Gulf of Lion to Port-Vendres, our first port of call in France. Nestled on the Vermillion Coast, Port-Vendres is a working fishing port with a rich history that dates back to Roman times. The harbor is well-protected and retains an authentic maritime character, with its waterfront lined with seafood restaurants serving the freshest catches from local waters. The surrounding hillsides, covered with vineyards, produce excellent local wines, making this an ideal place to sample the regional flavors.
Continuing along the coast, we reach Leucate, a small seaside town known for its vast sandy beaches and nearby Étang de Leucate, a large saltwater lagoon popular for windsurfing and kiteboarding. Leucate offers a more relaxed, nature-focused experience, with its marina providing a peaceful spot to rest before continuing on. The waters here are shallow and calm, perfect for exploring by tender or paddleboard.
From Leucate, we sail to Gruissan, a charming village built in a circular pattern around a medieval tower. Gruissan’s old town is incredibly picturesque, with narrow streets and pastel-colored houses that reflect its Mediterranean charm. Just outside the town lies the Étang de Gruissan, another saltwater lagoon, where pink-hued salt flats and flocks of flamingos create a stunning natural landscape. This stop offers a perfect mix of history, nature, and seaside relaxation.
As we continue east, we arrive at Cap d’Agde, one of the largest marinas in the Mediterranean. Cap d’Agde is a lively resort town with a wide range of facilities for visiting yachts and a long stretch of sandy beaches. The town’s volcanic origins are evident in its dark rock formations, and nearby, the ancient city of Agde, known as "the black pearl of the Mediterranean," offers a glimpse into the region’s rich past with its basalt stone buildings, historic churches, and narrow medieval streets.
Navigating this stretch of the Golfe du Lion requires particular attention to the weather, as the Mistral, a powerful, cold northwesterly wind, can sweep across the gulf with little warning, bringing strong gusts and rough seas. When the Mistral blows, it can create challenging conditions, especially around exposed headlands and shallow waters. Planning passages carefully and timing departures to avoid the worst of the wind is essential for a safe and comfortable journey.
Our next stop is Port-Camargue, near Le Grau-du-Roi and the gateway to the Camargue, a vast and unique wetland region famous for its white horses, pink flamingos, and black bulls. Port-Camargue is not only one of the largest marinas in Europe but also a key destination for sailors navigating the western Mediterranean. Its protected waters offer a safe haven after crossing the often unpredictable Golfe du Lion. From here, it’s well worth exploring the Camargue Regional Nature Park, where expansive salt flats, marshlands, and wild landscapes create a sense of being far removed from the bustling coastal towns. Whether on foot or by bike, the Camargue offers a chance to experience nature at its most serene and untamed.
Sailing onward, we reach Marseilles, France’s oldest city and one of its most dynamic. Marseilles is a bustling port with a fascinating mix of cultures, reflecting its long history as a gateway to the Mediterranean. The city’s historic Vieux-Port (Old Port) is a vibrant hub surrounded by restaurants and markets, while landmarks such as the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde offer stunning views of the city and the sea. Marseilles is a city to savor, with a mix of ancient history and modern energy.
From Marseilles, we sail along the stunning Calanques, a series of narrow, steep-walled inlets carved into the limestone cliffs. The Calanques National Park offers breathtaking scenery, with crystal-clear waters and dramatic cliffs that are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and hiking. We stop at La Ciotat, a charming port town with a long shipbuilding history, now home to a lively marina and a beautifully restored old town.
Our next destination is the island of Porquerolles, part of the Îles d'Hyères, a true Mediterranean paradise. Porquerolles is known for its unspoiled beauty, with pine forests, sandy beaches, and turquoise waters. The island is largely protected as a nature reserve, making it a tranquil escape from the mainland’s hustle and bustle. No cars are allowed on the island, creating a peaceful, timeless atmosphere.
Sailing further east, we enter the glamorous world of the French Riviera, starting with St-Tropez, a legendary seaside town that has long attracted artists, celebrities, and yacht owners. St-Tropez is a heady mix of old-world charm and modern luxury, with a beautiful old town, luxury boutiques, and a harbor filled with some of the world’s most impressive yachts. Despite its reputation for glitz and glamour, St-Tropez retains a charming, laid-back atmosphere, especially in the early mornings before the crowds arrive.
Next, we sail to Cannes, famous for its international film festival and luxurious lifestyle. The marina at Cannes is a hub of activity, and the town offers a wealth of restaurants, art galleries, and high-end shops. The nearby Îles de Lérins, a small group of islands just offshore, provide a peaceful retreat with shaded pine forests and historic monasteries.
Our journey continues to Nice, one of the Riviera’s largest and most vibrant cities. Nice’s Promenade des Anglais, stretching along the seafront, is iconic, offering stunning views of the Bay of Angels. The old town, with its narrow streets and colorful markets, is a delight to explore, while the city’s museums and art galleries showcase its rich cultural heritage.
